On March 24, 1980, as Archbishop Oscar Romero was just finishing his homily during Mass, he was assassinated by a U.S. made M-16 in the hands of a militant group headed by former major Roberto D’Aubuisson. His last words were very prophetic: “As pastor, I am obliged to give my life for those whom I love, and that is all Salvadorans. Martyrdom is a gift of God that I don’t think I deserve.
