Why has the music industry gone into its shell?

Since the mid-90’s, the music industry has been fighting a battle against illegal downloads – a war that it can never win. This is on the backdrop of several decades of controlling the distribution of music by ensuring pirate copies weren’t being sold at one or two notorious markets. Those halcyon days are long gone, and the ‘market stalls’ of today spread out across the globe to the most remote parts of eastern Europe and southern Asia.
